With apologies (sorry, not sorry) for the shameless self promotion, but I thought I’d take a moment to tell you all about Manchester United: The Lost Tapes, a new project I’ve been working on with Wayne Barton and Patrick Barclay. Wayne has authored 20 books on Manchester United’s history and Patrick is the long-time football writer at the Times, Guardian, Independent and Telegraph.
The Lost Tapes uses archival audio recorded by long-time BBC radio commentator Tom Tyrell, much of which has never been heard before. Tyrell covered the reds for three decades, including some of the most historic moments in United’s recent history.
The Lost Tapes brings together Tyrell’s audio, Barclay’s voiceover and Barton’s writing, with each episode covering a particular moment in time, personality or rivalry from the club’s history. It’s produced by me, Ed, as the first project from my new production company, Studio 1878.
Episode One is out now looking back on Eric Cantona’s time at United. It features audio from Eric, Alex Ferguson, Bryan Robson and more. In future episodes we dive into the rivalry between United and Arsenal in the late 90s and early noughties, the attempted takeover by Michael Knighton in 1989, and Welcome to Hell: United v Galatasaray in 1993.
The Lost Tapes can be found wherever you normally find your podcasts. Many thanks for indulging me.
